Intensity distribution of the output field in a injected VCSEL of 150 micron diameter, showing the switch on and off of two cavity solitons (CS) on command. The holding beam is always on, and all parameters are kept constant: Power holding beam (HB) : 10 mW, Injection current=262 mA.

The sequence of events is the following:

a) the writing beam (WB) is blocked;
b) a 15 micron focused WB (power=8 microwatt) targets a point into the homogeneous region; it induces the appearance of a single CS;
c) the WB is blocked again, the CS remains;
d) the WB is displaced in position and switched-on again and it generates a second CS;
e) the WB is blocked again and the two bright spots co-exist;
f) the WB targets again the second CS, but the relative phase of WB with respect to HB has been changed by and the CS is erased;
g) the WB targets again the first CS, but the relative phase of WB with respect to HB has been changed by 90 degrees and even the first CS is erased. Once the WB is blocked, the intensity distribution is identical to a).
