In 2000 Prof. Dr. Karl Ebeling and core scientists of
his VCSEL research team founded a joint venture with SCHOTT Glas called
U-L-M photonics GmbH/Germany/Ulm which develops, produces and sells vertical
Cavity-Surface-Emitting-Laserdiodes (VCSEL). With these semiconductor
products it is targeting the markets of datacom, printing and sensing.
Products are available in single- and multimode types at a modulation
rate from 2,5Gbps to 10Gbps and power from 0,5mW to 100mW per channel.
With the ramp-up of a full semiconductor production line and a sales net
U-L-M started its sales in 2001 in the datacom market, where VCSEL are
used for fiber based optical transmission of datas. In the meantime products
for the additional markets of sensorical elements (spectroscopy with single
mode lasers, lighting by high power lasers) have been invented and sold.
The perspective market of high power lasers for printing and free-space
communication (wireless) are in development.
