Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia - Como (Como)

The Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia is represented in this project by two distinct Research Units, belonging to the same institution: one located in Como at the Università dell'Insubria and the other in Bari, at the Polytechnic of Bari and will be led by Prof. Massimo Brambilla (Bari).
INFM has developed in the past an expertise of excellence in the formulation and theoretical/numerical analysis of several theoretical models describing the coupled spatio-temporal dynamics of the coherent field, the carrier density and –when applicable- the lattice thermal field, in Vertical Cavity Semiconductor Resonators of different sorts, including GaAs bulk, MQW and MQD active media. INFM has first predicted stable CS in such devices in 1997 and 4 years later INFM contributed to the first demonstration thereof in a sub-threshold bottom-emitting VCSEL. The group has acquired top skills in the theoretical modelling and analyses of spatially extended, nonlinear optical system, pattern formation and soliton formation in optics with a special focus on semiconductor devices. Numerical codes and are developed inside the group. Numerical simulations will be performed on adequate resources, as the INFM group has recently acquired a cluster for parallel computing. Project funding will ensure appropriate updating and increase of the computing power.
